"Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir - Book Review

Summary

"Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission--and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery--and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone.

Or does he?

An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian--while taking us to places it never dreamed of going."

Review

My friend, another sci-fi enthusiast, recommended this book to me, especially since a movie adaptation will be released next year. And what a ride it was! We all know that the anticipation of solving a mystery is often more fulfilling than the answer itself, and many sci-fi books tend to fall short in delivering a satisfying payoff. This book is not one of those.

Although I'm not particularly fond of the trope where a character wakes up with no memories, it works exceptionally well here. The author alternates between the present and the past, allowing us to gradually discover what happened alongside the main character. The motive for our protagonist, the most reluctant hero of all time, Ryland Grace, being in space is compelling and scientifically believable, which heightens the sense of urgency surrounding the mission.

The plot is based on a premise I can't reveal without giving away spoilers; however, even with extensive scientific explanations involving physics and biology, the core of the story revolves around unlikely friendships, existential questions, and the resilience of the human spirit (and other kinds of spirits) in the face of adversity, as any good sci-fi book should.

Key Takeaways

  • Smooth narrative with plenty of scientific explanations
  • Exploration of existential questions about humanity's place in the universe
  • Extremely fulfilling payoff with psychological depth

Who Should Read This

Readers interested in compelling and unforgettable sci-fi that poses existential questions and delivers rewarding payoffs should definitely pick this up.

"I took a life-form I knew nothing about and used technology I didn’t understand to modify it. Of course there were unintended consequences. It was stupidly arrogant of me to assume I could predict everything."
